Currículo Resumido / Short resume

Graduated with honours in Optics and Optometry at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1997. After a fellowship at CCLRU, (University of New South Wales, Australia), joined the Universidade do Minho in Braga, Portugal in 2001.

• Full Professor of Optometry and Vision Science, Physics Department – School of Sciences at UMinho.
• President/Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Minho, Portugal
• Chief Editor of the scientific journal "Journal of Optometry".
• President elect of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics for 2026-2028.
• Member European Council of Optometry and Optics Qualifications Board.
• Evaluator for public funding agencies in 4 countries.
• Ambassador of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society for Portugal.
• Ambassador of International Myopia Institute.
• Network Coordinator of OBERON MSCA ITN involving 8 Beneficiaries, 7 Partners (including 8 non-academic) and 15 Early Stage Researchers in 8 countries (2021-2025).

 Along with teaching tasks in Optometry and Vision Sciences and different institutional and international coordination duties, coordinates the Clinical and Experimental Optometry Research Lab with activities in clinical visual optics, specialty contact lenses, myopia management, presbyopia and epidemiology research. Published more than 240 articles in indexed journals (Web of Science h-index=44, > 6400 citations). Authored 3 books and 30 book chapters and has presented conferences in more than 30 countries.

Received different prizes and awards including the UMinho Scientific Merit Award 2018 and International Optometrist of the Year by Catalonia Polyethnic University in 2016.

Evaluator for public funding agencies in 4 countries, and Ambassador of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society for Portugal.

Listed among the most influential optometrist in the Global Ranking and 2% most cited researchers according to Stanford University and Elsevier editorial group.
